5Removed Element like it was butterDec 23, 2010
By N. Jacks "Travel Guru"
For years I have been borrowing my Dad's old fashion thin metal socket that is used with a screw driver to turn it. I usually ended up cutting my hand when it slipped and took 30 minutes to get the thing removed since there was no way to get torque.

I never saw one of these REAL sockets made just for this project in the store but saw them on here and decided to give it a try. I turned off the water heater breaker, drained the unit and then attached this heavy duty socket to my socket wrench. Well the old saying " The right tool for the right job" not only held true, but now my Dad wants to borrow this from me. I had the water heater element removed in less than 30 seconds, not 30 minutes like the old one. ( came out like butter out of tub, in other words with ease )

1000% recommend this item, it truly paid for itself the first use and it is very sturdy. I can't see it ever breaking, it is heavy duty and expect it to last forever.

3Very helpful, but could be betterNov 08, 2011

I agree that this socket makes water heater elements much easier to remove and install. Even if you only have to use it once in your lifetime, it's worth it.

But this socket could be improved. On the typical water heater element, there's only about 1/8" (maybe 3/16" if you're lucky) of hex head (the part of the water heater element that the socket will connect to) to grab on to. So it's important that the socket fit as flush as possible to the hex head to grab as much of it as it can.

Unfortunately, the hex faces inside this socket are relieved from the end of the socket by about 1/16". This means this socket will not sit flush on the heater element and will not grab on to all (possibly only 50%) of the hex head. This makes it easy for the socket to slide off, slip and wobble. If the heater element is on tight or old or rusted, the socket will not be as effective as it could be. You could end up rounding the edges of the element's hex head or busting a knuckle or twisting the water tank. You overcome this design flaw by putting lots of pressure on the socket, pushing it into the heater element. Unfortunately, this is difficult to do when you are also pushing/pulling the wrench in another direction.

I haven't had to, but you could use a T-handle wrench like Vim (VIMTT500) Turbo-T 1/2" Drive Speed "T" Handle Wrench to remove a difficult element.

Maybe there's a better socket for water heater element out there, until then this is it.

5Saved me $50Mar 11, 2012

The sheet metal sockets for hot water heater elements at Home Depot and Ace are junk, you cannot make tools out of sheet steel. The TEKTON socket removed a stuck element in 3 seconds with my 1/2 in drive ratchet. I would have paid American Homeshield $60 to send a plumber out and they would want to know how I knew the element was bad.

A serious hunk of metal. Way better than one of the cheap alternatives. A great deal for the price - I'm just surprised by the evident quality.

TEKTON 1828 1/2-Inch by 1-1/2-Inch Water Heater Socket

All I could find at local hardware and big box stores {Home Depot, & Lowe's) were ones that weren't cast but formed by a brake and used a rod to turn which bent and the sockets slipped.

This socket means business on tough to unscrew water heater elements. It wont slip, and if a ratchet doesn't give enough leverage, than a breaket bar will do the job.
