Reliable, adequate sockets, compact, durableMar 24, 2012
By pond-jumper Let's say first thing that this is not an automotive socket set. Everything's undersized for that level of torque and reach. Yeah, you could pull a car door and replace it, but it's not for the heavy or long reach stuff.
This is an around the house set. It should handle most everything you can imagine in that setting, except maybe for the hand driver (screwdriver-like tool). It's fairly chintzy. Seems to be ABS or even vinyl material for the handle and it's really small in diameter. Perhaps it was designed for a 10 year-old to get his/her hand around it, but your average adult male isn't going to be able to grip this thing to turn stubborn nuts. The handle is smaller in diameter than a Sh*rp** marker and is of softer plastic material.
There are metric and SAE sockets of a wide selection, several sizes being in duplicate; one for each of 2 ratchets. There isn't a 1/4 ratchet, but there is a converter to step the 1/2 ratched down to 1/4 (or use the hand driver, which is also 1/4). A 2.5 inch extension completes the set.
My old sets seem to have disappeared after I moved (a polite way of saying the movers stole a lot of my tools). I'll have to rebuild my collection and plan on getting a much heavier set than this one, but the bottom line is this: If you need a compact set for the home, at a fair price, and capable of handling SAE and metric with reliable performance, this is the set you need to buy. I'm very pleased with it and used it immediately to assemble a dump cart for the garden which required a lot of torque to seat the marine lock nuts.
I've absolutely no complaints other than that cheap-o hand driver. What WERE they thinking?!?
