I measured the diameter of an exacto blade holder to be 7/16 (accurate, but not readily apparent since the end points are significantly rounded top and bottom) using the closed end (bigger prongs).

With the open end I measured the diameter of a hole punched in a ruler. The open end read as 9/32 but physically measuring the ends with a separate ruler (3 actually) showed the true diameter to be 10/32.

Basically it's not a precision tool but would certainly be sturdy in a kids backpack. The lock works well.

3Functional - for occasional use only.Oct 15, 2009

I picked one of these up in the bargain bin of my local auto parts store for $2.99. It was the only caliper they had in stock, and I wanted to measure a brake rotor that day, without making a special trip to the tool store.

First, it's impossible to properly zero. The fixed scale is printed on a sticker, and the placement of that sticker is not perfect, so it will vary from caliper to caliper. With the jaws empty and closed, mine reads about .04mm. However, this is easy to adjust for as you make measurements, so long as you have checked what yours reads empty, you should be able to take accurate measurements. So long as you can remember how to do subtraction (or addition, if yours gives a negative reading at zero).

The vernier scale is not printed or etched onto the slider, it simply consists of grooves stamped into the edge of the slider window. Bad lighting, strange viewing angles, and shadows can easily obscure the reading. Look at it straight on, with a shop light or flashlight, and you should be able to take a reading without having to squint.

The slider wiggles a lot on the scale, making readings erratic. However, when you tighten the lock, the wiggles go away and the scale lines up perfectly. You'll want to make sure that you have the lock firmly tightened when you take your reading; I keep mine adjusted so that it opens and closes with a bit of resistance, and tighten it down further before I take a reading.

All in all, it's usable. If you only need a caliper once in a blue moon, it can do the job as well as most vernier calipers. However, if you plan to use it frequently, you should probably skip this and just buy a dial caliper or a digital caliper instead.

3It is not a precision tools.Feb 10, 2011

That tools looks pretty good on the picture but not be confused. It looks like a Chinese toy when you will have it in the hand. It is still helpful to measure a diameter of pipe to help to buy a right connector in Home Depot or choose a size of nut. That is it. It is not good tool for metalworkers. But unfortunately, I was not able to find better non-electronic caliper in US.
