1TEKTON by MIT 5737 Coil Spring Compressor SetJun 22, 2011
By dej408
I received the Tekton strut coil spring compressor a couple days ago and used it yesterday. I attached the spring compressors on each side of the spring and placed a safety hook on each side of the puller hook and spring. The first spring compressed and I replaced the shock absorber and had no problems, the product worked wonderful. I attached the spring compressors the same as the first and started to compress the second spring (the spring was only about 1/4 compressed) and the single puller hook on both units cracked and one actually split apart into 5-6 pieces. There was very little stress on the units and I checked them from the first shock replacement and there were no cracks showing. I've borrowed and used these MacPherson style strut spring compressors many times over the years as an auto mechanic with no problems but this unit needs to be looked at.

The cast was not clean steel there was a lot of trash in the steel. I think this item was not safe at all.

The last time I changed struts on a car was in 1978 on a Datsun 240Z. To do it I made spring compressors out of scrap steel and a couple pieces of threaded rod. It was pretty shaky but did the job. In getting ready to do the job again I decided a better choice would be a manufactured tool. I bought this item and did the 4 struts on my car without any problem. Very easy to use, much more stable than the homemade compressor of my past. I did lube the screws with lithium grease before starting. As far as I can see the compressor is undamaged and ready to do the next strut I need to change.

Overall it is a good value for the price. I had a little trouble fitting the unit in the space around the spring, but it worked.
